Best Shelter-in-Place Activity: Boring Company Not-a-Flamethrower
You’ve perfected your sourdough – your starter is a bubbly joy. You’ve learned to sew, and made dozens of homemade masks. You’ve watched all 8 seasons of Homeland, and just for nostalgia’s sake have re-watched all of West Wing. You’ve Kondo’d your closet, completed a 2000 piece puzzle of a modernist painting, made more dalgona coffees than one person should drink in a lifetime, and extracted dna from strawberries to make a double helix daiquiri. What’s next on your shelter-in-place agenda?
How about a flamethrower? A Boring Company Not-a-Flamethrower is the perfect activity for these times of social distancing. It’s not really safe to do around others – if you’re too close to someone for it to be safe to point this flamethrower at them, then you’re not socially distancing!
The flamethrower complies with California’s law (Health and Safety code 12750(a)) limiting civilian flamethrowers to a 10-foot flame, and in the US, unless you’re in Maryland, you don’t need a license for one.
Like toilet paper and disinfectant wipes, this isn’t something you can easily buy right now – you needed to have planned ahead. Unless you ordered within a few days of the announcement on January 27th, 2018, you’re out of luck. But maybe you got lucky and got one of the 20,000 unit limited run, and even picked it up from the pickup party in the SpaceX parking lot. Or maybe you missed that, but ordered one on ebay (there are still some available there – expensive at $1600+ – you can get a much cheaper, replica, though). But maybe it’s been sitting on a shelf ever since, since at first it just seemed like an overpriced roofing torch, right?
So now you can put it to use! Greet your neighbors as they jog by, but with a good bit of flame, you can remind them not to get too close!
And if you’ve still got some shelter-in-place cooking projects going, maybe this can help there too. It’s not going to do much for your sourdough, but you can use a flamethrower to sear your sous-vide steak, or caramelize the sugar on your creme brulee! Or follow The Verge’s instructions for not-a-flamethrower s’mores. And here’s an article about one author’s Flamethrower Diet – torched asparagus with truffle salt, garlic, and lemon zest FTW!
One thing, though – don’t light a cigarette with it. Trust me on this one.
The Best Boring Company Flamethrower reviewsOther optionsA Boring Not-a-Flamethrower doesn’t feel quite right for you?Want something just a bit different? Bigger? Smaller? Not-quite-the-same? Here are some other options.
DriveTanks.com has a video showing how small the flame you get from this is in comparison to a “real” flamethrower.
If you’re looking for something a bit bigger, you could try one of the models from ThrowFlame:
- XMatter Throwflame XL18 – 65 foot range! ($3200) – backpack mounted. You can get “napalm mix” to go with it?! GunsAmerica.com calls it “hellfire unleashed”. They weren’t put off by the napalm mix – said that it made the fire stream go farther – they say “you can’t help but smile using the XL-18”.
- Not-quite-as-big-but-still-bigger-than-Boring is the XL15 ($1600). Popular Mechanics describes it as “[w]ay better than your average Super Soaker full of gasoline.” Digital Trends points out that you can use it to recreate that cool Sigourney Weaver flamethrower scene from Aliens. (Want to try recreating other horror movie flamethrower scenes? Here’s a roundup.)
Or if you want something smaller, you could shoot fire from your fingertips with a magician’s flash gun. See https://www.gearclubdirect.com/le-maitre-mg02-double-shot-flash-gun/, or on amazon https://amzn.com/B00FK92PZ4, https://amzn.com/B01MV4XN7E, or https://amzn.com/B076YQ5LF7
And that’s not all! You can also get a flamethrower kit for your car or motorcycle exhaust pipe!
I hope Elon Musk is firing some flame into the air, at a safe distance from others, to celebrate the birth of X Æ A-12!
